With a coastline of about 6200kms, this region is also referred to as "Top End" and comprises a distinctive composition of woodlands, rainforests. It is not surprising then that tourism remains one of the main industries and growth has been consistent at over 8% in terms of visitors, and what is more interesting is that the number of overseas visitors has been growing at over 20%.
You have a number of wonderful and scenic drive destinations in the Kakadu, as well as Nitmiluk, National Parks. The drive is through Nature’s Way and this sealed road that is suitable for both two as well as four wheel drive is an absolute delight for nature lovers. The extensive range of flora and fauna provides enough opportunities for brilliant photography. This drive of 457 kilometres starts at Darwin and takes the Arnhem highway crossing Adelaide as well as the MaryRiver wetlands, to get you to the pride of World Heritage that is Kakadu. It then goes on to maintain course and finally intersects the Stuart Highway to get you to another wonderful park, which is the Nitmiluk.
In terms of a long scenic drive, there is nothing to beat this one and the very convenient stop over facilities provided on the way to Kakadu ensure that you are never too tired as you make your way to the park.
So what is special about Kakadu?
Well, this park boasts of some of the most ancient Aboriginal galleries for rock art and can be reached only by vehicle. If you do not mind walking, then you have the option of following the long stretch of walking trails that are marked. Explorers on the way can enjoy the serene beauty of the Yellow Water Billabong and take in the vast variety of wildlife as well as birds. There are some huge crocodiles that you can also see. Other activities that are very popular are canoeing, fishing, photography and sharing time with the local Aboriginal tribes.
Similarly at the Nitmiluk Park, you can enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Katherine Hot Springs and explore the Cutta Cutta Caves, that are reputed to be over 500 million years old. That is just a ten minute drive. The Nitmiluk Park is again another place that is rich in flora and fauna. You can either take a flight or cruise along the gorge to spot a variety of birds and appreciate the majestic rocky walls that surround the gorge. The Nitmiluk Gorge is believed to have been sculpted out of sandstone over time by the Katherine River. Other attractions include the Gunlom and Barramundi Gorge plunge pools.
