Melbourne, with its outstanding transport system and numerous tourist sites, is a very tourist friendly city. It also has lots of great restaurants, theatres and family activities.

The Flinders Street Station is a famous landmark, and useful for tourist trying to get their bearings on a new place. Located on the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Street, it is the oldest station with a 700 metre main platform, which is the longest in the country. Approximately a quarter of a million of the city’s residents pass through the station daily.

A short walk for the station, and located at the end of Swanston Street, are the Victoria Markets. Some of the best quality food produce, including handcrafted cheese and specialty sausages, is available here. The Sunday morning flea market is also a good draw card for thousands of sightseers searching for bargains.


The City Circle Tram is a free mode of transportation that has stops at Flinders St and continues on to Spring, Latrobe, and Spencer streets. The public trams provide an ideal way to travel in central Melbourne; they are an historic part of the city and date to early 1900s. They run from 10am till 6pm at 10-minute intervals and pass near many of the major city sights.

The Melbourne Aquarium is another interesting place to visit and a popular destination for tourists. It is located on the Yarra River and under the Flinders Street Viaduct. The Oceanarium extends seven metres below the ground level. Children and adults alike will be mesmerized by marine life at close quarters. The Aquarium is a short walk from the Flinders St station, at the intersection of Flinders and King Streets. It is also possible to reach it by boarding the free city tram.

Another popular spot is the Melbourne Planetarium. Using the latest technology, the planetarium takes the visitors on an unforgettable journey through the skies and the galaxy, all from the safety and comfort of a chair. The sky is projected on a gigantic dome ceiling for the duration of a journey that lasts thirty minutes. To get there, take a train towards Werribee from the Flinders Street Railway Station, Platform 5. Get off at Spotswood Railway Station. Once you leave the station, it’s a walk of about 970 metres to the Planetarium.


Another point of interest is the Yarra Valley Market. Yarra Valley is about a 50-minute drive from Melbourne. The market is made up of numerous stalls, providing handmade goods in a relaxing rural surrounding. A nice thing to do is buy a coffee, some delicious Yarra Valley food, and just sit under a tree and enjoy a the location. Besides the market, there are wildlife parks and nature walks as well.

While it hiring a car to visit the valley, is one way to get there, it is also possible to use public transport. Take the Lilydaly train from Flinders Street Station to Lilydale station. You’ll need a ticket for both zone one and two, as this station is in a different zone.
