Below are details of some really great destinations in Victoria:
a) The Yarra Valley And Wineries
This is a place that is just an hour’s drive from Melbourne and has been well known since 1835 for its climate that helps the Pinot Noirs, Cabernet Sauvignons and the Chardonnays to flourish. The grapes here produce lovely bubblies as well. The place is wonderfully scenic and for somebody who loves nature, the fine arts and food, you could not have chosen a better place. Many concerts and festivals are held through the year.
b) The Healesville Sanctuary
This is a very well maintained open-air zoo that has been recognised through many ecotourism awards. Your visit to the Yarra Valley is incomplete without a visit to this zoo; you can also participate in a session called ‘Meet the Keeper’ where visitors can get to learn more about the animals, reptiles and birds housed in the zoo. Popular presentations about the flora and fauna, as well as the aboriginals and their culture, will help you pick up interesting nuggets of information.
c) The High Country
This is a definite visit and conveniently accessible from Sydney, as well as Melbourne, through the Hume Highway. Take this highway to get to the Great Alpine Road to pass through Ovens Valley and Mount Buffalo to get over the Great Dividing Range. This road is the highest one in Australia and winds through the most beautiful valleys, rivers, vineyards and farms through its length of 308 kms. You can then ease into to Bairnsdale that is on Gippsland Lakes. You need to stay with the Great Alpine Road in order to reach Mount Hotham.
The High Country has a number of interesting destinations and all through the year, you will find something to engage you. The many villages dotting the place house families that run the boutique wineries, restaurants and lodgings, and they are always pleased to welcome visitors. There are eight wine regions spread across the High Country, and the family wineries here produce wonderfully fortified wines to go with delicious Italian cuisine.
The High Country is home to some of the best national parks and reserves, of which the Alpine National Park is the largest one. It is a protected area covering a major portion of Australia’s alpine environment and has the widest range of flora and fauna. Many south-eastern Australian rivers have their origin here.
You can have a wonderful time cycling through King’s Valley, picking up the fresh local produce and even knocking on the cellar door of a family winery to get something truly vintage and special.
